It turned into a beautiful day suddenly, after what seemed like aeons of greyness and mist and rain (not that I particularly object to inclement weather, but it gets old after a while, and I’m sick of wearing a jacket.) The sudden bursts of colour against the formerly gray palette of the city made me think back to Le Ballon Rouge, one of my absolute favourite movies when I was small. It’s a little more melancholy than the actual tone of the day, but the delightful escapism of the subject, the beauty of the cinematography and the memories of childhood it evokes more than balance that out. Plus what can beat daydreaming about friends in strange places?
For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s viewable here, and was also restored and re-released on a DVD with White Mane, an earlier short by the same director.
