That’s it. This woman is going to be my inspiration today, red chiffon wrap, bored look and all. I do think her look is just what I need to add some zing to my day. What is a “Snow-Ball of Fire”, anyway? I’m intrigued but slightly terrified.

So, it would seem that I’m on a vintage lingerie kick. Just perhaps. Maybe. Signs pointing that way. Anyway, point is, I was messing around on the net some more and discovered the Maidenform Dream campaign. So much fun and such great illustrations– I just had to post them!
(Also, I amusingly think that the bras shaped like this would make a totally cute crop top in a different colour. Not on me, but on someone with the stomach for it. (hyuk))
By the way, I don’t even want to think how many “Dream” titles I wavered between before picking this one. Also, for those who’ve read the marvellous Sandman comics, it reminds me of the scene in an early volume (I think it was in The Doll’s House, incidentally the first volume I ever read, and the one I had Neil Gaiman sign for me before running away from him in an adulatory panic) when all the music that comes out are Dream songs– Mr. Sandman, Dream A Little Dream, Sweet Dreams, etc. Fun times.

I love old lingerie ads. There’s something so sweet and innocently naughty about the pictures and the copy, with all the fresh-faced girls giving saucy looks over the prim underthings they’re modelling. These are all from the Formfit line, and are such a pleasure to see– relief from the slack jaws and bulging implants all too prevalent in modern ads. I love the coquettish glances and the unabashed enormity of the garments. So much fun to see.

In celebration of my very first beach trip this year (yes, I’m aware it’s the end of July) I’ve pulled together some Jantzen ad campaigns from the days of yore. Let’s hope that my day is similarly characterised by glamour, wacky hijinks and burly men. Sadly, I am not possessed of the suit above, else I don’t think I’d need to worry about anything ever again.
Enjoy! And keep your fingers crossed for good weather for me. My skin has achieved astounding new levels of pallidity.

[via] This one above may be my favourite of the series… I love the green and the stylised lines of the design.

[via] Not strictly swimwear, but i couldn’t resist the patterns and that little father-son interchange in the background.
[via] You see? Jantzen = wacky hijinks and burly men!
[via] And how adorable is this suit?!

I grew up on Bernard Villemot’s fantastic Orangina ads, but they were just so much a part of pretty things around me that it simply never occurred to me to think of his having designed anything else. Recently, I saw his Bally ads for the first time, and fell in love. The saturated colours and simple, graphic designs are the same, but taken out of the sand, sea and oranges context they take on a more appropriate, more sophisticated feeling. These posters combine my favourite things– clean lines, bright colours and shoes. Not very hard to go wrong with that.

This ad above easily could have been the inspiration for American Apparel’s advertising campaigns. Minus the hearty dose of wholesomeness that seems to come with doing the skate. These kids are so white and all-American that they clearly will never be engaging in any of the deviant acts that the AA models seem to engage in on an hourly basis, between spates of thrusting their crotches out at you from the pages of magazines and unzipping their jumpsuits on website sidebars. Yes, little bit annoyed at the fact that I feel as though I’m looking at soft-core porn whenever I use a website with one of their ads on it.
Rant aside, I am now sorely saddened that I am not among the elect that is blessed with the knowledge of how it is exactly that one does the skate. Is it like the mashed potato? Or am I displaying my sore ignorance of eras and their dance movements? I fear I will never be able to capture the ideal of joy, as seen in the strangely awkward poses here. I shall have to temper my sadness with viewings of the other ads below, in their full cheesy vintage glory.
